Corndog With No Stick

ff2Having a twin at home and a twin in the NICU sucks.

It’s like having peanut butter without  jelly.
Like a corndog with no stick.
Like baloney without cheese.
It’s like buying kitchen furniture, but they deliver only the table and not the chairs.  But it doesn’t matter, because you’re too sad to eat.

cordy_nicu1Cordy is still in the NICU.  As one nurse told us, it’s easy to get in, but hard to get out.  What is this place, the hospital’s version of a Rubik’s Cube?  Maybe when they’re not looking, i can take all the color squares off her chart and reglue them in the right order.  I’ll use all brainteaser-solving and mathletics skills i have to break her free!

She went in because her sugars were too low.  They had her on an IV and pricked her heel every 3 hours.  Her sugars were improving and they were lowering her dose of glucose when they realized it was leaking, and she wasn’t getting the full dose.  So they just took her off, and she was just fine.

Unfortunately, in the meantime, she had apnea for a second.  She stopped breathing and her blood oxygen level dropped.  This is a common problem for preemies.  It’s happened twice since, but during feedings – meaning she was probably just momentarily choking.  That stills sounds bad, but it’s not – it’s much better than the baby forgetting  to breath.

cordy_nicu2While they were monitoring her for that, they started picking on her weight.  As if she doesn’t have enough problems, she’s already getting ridiculed!  What next, will the nurse steal her lunch money?  I hope she makes friends with a big weight baby from the NICU, like a 10 or 12 pounder, and he can offer her some protection.

Her birth weight was 5lbs 2oz.  She dropped down to 4lbs 9oz.  She just picked up a bit, and tonight she was 5.03lbs!  Latest estimate of her springing baby jail is Sunday.  We’re both impatient.

Because it’s like cake without ice cream.
Like a smile without a laugh.
We want our girls together again.

When they delivered our kitchen furniture we got the chairs and no table(seriously, the table was cracked and we had to wait for a replacement)

Hopefully Cordy gets out soon. I know what the wait is like. My nephew was in the NICU for a month after he was born and my sister and B-I-L kept getting a date for him getting out and had it pushed back. He also had more problems than Cordy so hopefully in your case she makes it out early.

  • Sounds like she’s on the road to recovery. But yeah…the NICU would freak me out. Hang in there and keep us all updated.

This heart of mine has been crying the week through as thoughts drift in your direction . The perfect mingling of joy and despair that must dwell inside of you. . .and Ange. It must be unbearable.
I can’t imagine having to leave a child behind. . .I think about Cordy all alone in that big hospital, forsaken and alone, ripped away from everything she has ever known so totally. . .and Jules, who must feel incomplete without the sister she’s always had at her side. I’m sorry, I know I’m not helping. I can fathom only the slightest bit of what you all must feel right now. . .

But chin up, lad! Sunday is so soon. . .only a few moments to pass until your family is complete, healthy and whole. Happily Ever After is just around the corner. . .

Great to hear about Cordy’s recovery. I can’t wait for her to be out either. It’s just a little starting snag. Soon, you will have Both of them in your arms in the wonderful new home you are both making for them.
While it may not be quite as cozy as Momma, It seems a much more interesting place to hang out with more things to do and probably better lighting… Soon.

  • I know how impatient I feel…can’t even imagine how impatient you and Ange feel. Hopefully the next few days will go by fast and you will have your family all in one palce.

  • Hang in there, your little girl will be reunited with her sister very soon.
I think she might be an actress when she gets older…She’s already requesting a GRAND entrance…

    They are soo cute.

  • I know you’ve heard it countles times, but…GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK! CONGRATS on the kids…AND, my thoughts are with yhou…your wife, and kids….WOW!

  • Hang in there! Only a little while longer and the two girls will be together again with each other and their favorite people, their parents and sister! Tell you the truth, I’d be impatient, too. She looks so tiny and beautiful!
Apok, I appreciate your sense of humor. Even in the midst of everything you are going through, you still manage to be funny. I loved the bit about making friends with a 10 or 12 pounder so he could protect her!
I hope Cordy does so well she gets out before Sunday.
Keep us up to date and the photos coming. They are gorgeous babies!

  • love the babies, apok…i know they will be reunited soon. great to hear cordy is off the glucose and gaining the weight back. *crossing everything i can for a sunday jail release :) *

  • It’s funny to hear your view of the NICU nurses- taking Cordy’s lunch money- priceless. I’m glad to hear that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ll be looking forward to Sunday for yah! -Jason

  • Here’s to a speedy exit and trip home for Cordy! Keep us posted. And don’t forget, if she does make friends with that 10-12lb kid, make sure she’s the smart one and he’s just the hired muscle!

  • Well, rest assured that you and your family are in my and my family’s thoughts. And I know that Cordy will be home soon, and you’ll have the best PB&J in town!
